Assembly line of white refrigerators wait to be tested in factory

If you are searching for a resilient industry to market to, look no further than refrigeration and heating equipment.

Properly storing food and maintaining safe and comfortable temperatures inside buildings are the main responsibilities of this sector.

By creating custom microclimates, it is possible to provide livable structures anywhere in the world. This has had substantial effects on population distribution, health and urban development. The same technology has also drastically reduced food spoilage and associated waste. Because of these factors, this industry is relatively insulated against even the biggest global upheavals.

Obviously a critical industry, COVID-19 could not completely shut down this sector.

However, there were some challenges, as the relatively high international distribution rate of 50% had already created hesitation with international buyers who were wary of potential tariffs.

Despite these difficulties, the number of jobs over the past year has increased by nearly 4% to 94,743.

There is a lot to know about the biggest companies in this sector. We've listed the top manufacturers to give you a bit of insight into their histories, products and accomplishments to help you better appeal to them.

About the Top U.S. Refrigeration & Heating Equipment Manufacturers

Emerson and its 2,700 employees recently launched a $100 million expansion project in its hometown of Sidney, OH. Laboratories in offices will be renovated and expanded during this project, which is scheduled to be completed in 2024. The company needs this expansion in part due to strong demand for its refrigeration, cold chain, HVAC controls, electronics and automation for both residential and commercial applications.

Carrier Global Corp.

In 1876, Willis Carrier invented a slide rule that was the basis of the first modern air conditioning system. Today, 2,500 people keep this tradition of climate control alive through commercial, residential, and transportation air conditioning and refrigeration. The Collierville, TN, division manufactures heating and air conditioning equipment while the Indianapolis, IN, division builds furnaces exclusively.

Whirlpool Corp.

A significant portion of Whirlpool's business comes from HVAC and refrigeration. In total, the company generates $20 billion in annual sales through 59 different research, development and manufacturing centers. The Amana, IA, location focuses on gas and electric home appliances and employs 2,100 people.

Electrolux Major Appliances

With nearly 2,000 employees, this multinational company owns many well-known brands including Frigidaire, Kelvinator and White-Westinghouse.

The major appliances division based in Anderson, SC, is focused solely on refrigerator design and manufacturing.

The La Crosse division employs 1,800 people who design HVAC and building automation solutions, while the Clarksville, TN, division handles commercial heating and air conditioning.

AAON, Inc.

Headquartered in Tulsa, OK, AAON manufactures premium HVAC equipment for the new construction and replacement markets.

These expansive facilities cover over 1.5 million square feet and employ 1,500 people. One of the most unique parts of this complex is the Norman Asbjornson Innovation Center.

Named for its founder, this building is able to create extreme environments so that their HVAC systems can be tested in real conditions. Temperatures can be controlled from -20 to 140°F, winds can go up to 50mph and rainfall levels can reach eight inches per hour.

Lennox Industries, Inc.

Not only does Lennox build energy-efficient heating and air conditioning equipment, but they also support the supermarket, restaurant and pharmacy sectors with commercial refrigeration solutions.

Located in Stuttgart, AR, the 1,500 employees enjoy giving back through extensive volunteer and charitable work. The company often donates HVAC equipment to the 100+ organizations that they support.

Follett, LLC

Easton, PA, is home to this world-renowned specialist in ice storage and transportation, water and beverage dispensers, and medical-grade refrigeration.

In 2019, they announced the expansion of their manufacturing facilities near Easton. This will increase the total working space to 250,000 square feet, which will help the 1,200 employees keep up with the demand for their products - specifically for their medical-grade refrigerators and ice machines.

Vertiv Group Corp.

Keeping computer and data systems cool is another service provided by this industry. At the forefront is the Columbus, OH, company called the Vertiv Group and its 1,120 employees.
