Even though digitalization has hurt publishers, there is a strong demand for printing equipment in areas like packaging and custom printing products. Printing machinery manufacturers are embracing modern technologies to offer products that are more performing, connected and sustainable.
The outlook for the printing equipment market is bright, with digitalization transforming this sector. In 2021, photo printing and merchandising brought in $19 billion, up from $14.5 billion in 2016. As demand rises, the printing equipment market globally is expected to reach $15.7 billion by the year 2026.
According to MNI, compiler and publisher of the industrial data that powers IndustrySelect, there are currently 376 printing equipment manufacturers in the U.S. currently. The industry employs 12,353 workers in the United States and reports total sales of $2.2 billion in the past year.
MNI’s survey of printing equipment manufacturers also finds that distribution trends are different for this industry. While two-thirds of all manufacturers sell their products in the US, a comparable portion of printing machinery manufacturers focuses on international sales.
Additionally, 38% of printing equipment manufacturers are located in the Midwest, followed by a distant 27% located in the Northeast. The South and West trail with 21% and 14% of companies respectively.
