The forestry and lumber industry is a key element of the U.S. rural economy. In fact, the paper and pulp sector is predicted to reach nearly $680 billion by 2027.

Additionally, the National Association of State Foresters is currently seeking an additional $500 million in the form of a COVID-19 stimulus package to support the forest products supply chain, forest management and job creation in this industry.

Industry Overview

According to data collected by MNI, there are more than 17,000 lumber companies in the country. A majority are located in the South and Northeast, each region housing 37%. An overwhelming majority (87%) focuses on domestic distribution while only 10% of lumber companies have an international distribution strategy in place.

This sector is also slightly less likely to import raw materials, since 8% of lumber companies rely on imports, while 11% of all manufacturers purchase raw materials on foreign markets.

This domestic focus makes lumber companies less likely to experience supply chain disruption, but there are challenges linked to sustainable forest management practices and COVID-19 demand problems.
