As with many things in today's world, automotive stamping companies are facing a shifting environment. Between tariffs, growth opportunities and increasing jobs, this industry is trending towards more positive change than can be said for other sectors. Let's take a closer look at the climate.

Tariffs and Trade

Trade conditions strongly impact the automotive metal stamping sector. Since February 8, 2020, a 25% tariff has attached to imported motor vehicle bumper stampings.

Further complicating matters, additional tariffs announced for body stampings were limited to agricultural use tractors. Differing rules confuse the market.

On February 10, 2021, the Coalition of American Metal Manufacturers and Users (CAMMU) sent a letter to President Biden. They demanded an end to the steel and aluminum tariffs enacted under President Trump.

CAMMU claims that the tariffs hurt small family-owned manufacturers. They also assert that the regulations spur retaliation against American industry.

The organization adds that tariffs cause a trade imbalance that weakens national security. They ask the president to address the root cause of trade problems, which is excess capacity in China. Biden’s answer could give American auto stampers a hoped-for boost.

Expanding Opportunities

report by Market Research Future predicts rapid growth in automotive metal stamping. Smart-vehicle demand will drive the increase. Other positive signs include the following:

• Ford is spending $100 million to build its E-Transit van in Kansas City, Missouri.
• General Motors announced that by mid-decade, it would offer 30 all-electric vehicles. It’s aiming to sell two-thirds of them in North America.
