With its low business costs, top-notch infrastructure, and generous incentive programs, Indiana is a major state for manufacturing, home to some top companies in the pharmaceutical, automotive and steelmaking industries. MNI has reported on a number of new facilities opening in the state. Most recently, NHK Seating, which announced plans more than a year ago to open a new facility in the state, has completed construction of its massive 300,000+ square-foot plant in Frankfort. The new plant, which will serve nearby Subaru of Indiana, is expected to create 100 jobs over the next four years..
Indiana is currently home to 8,472 manufacturers employing 589,816 workers. These include some top companies in the transportation equipment and pharmaceutical industries, which we’ll take a look at in a moment. But first here are some key statistics on Indiana’s industrial sector based on our survey of Indiana manufacturers.
According to MNI, Indiana’s top city for number of manufacturing jobs is Indianapolis, with 67,962 workers. A major industrial city, Indianapolis ranks #10 in the nation for cities with the most manufacturing jobs. Read more: Top Manufacturing Cities in the U.S.
Other top cities in Indiana include

Marion County is Indiana’s largest in terms of industrial jobs, home to 80,179 workers. This is followed by Elkhart (67,516), Allen (32,546), Lake (30,241) and St. Joseph Counties (21,691).
Taking a look at the state’s top industries, transportation equipment accounts for 19% of Indiana’s industrial workforce. This is followed by industrial machinery, which accounts for 12% and fabricated metal products with 10%. The primary metal industry employs 9% of Indiana’s industrial workers and rubber & miscellaneous plastic products employs 8%.

1. Eli Lilly & Co. (Indianapolis, IN)
Pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly is among the world’s foremost drug companies, employing 10,157 at its Indianapolis headquarters and thousands more around the world. 2. Lippert Components, Inc. (Elkhart, IN)
A major supplier to the transportation equipment industry, Lippert Components produces components such as chassis, slide-outs, windows, electronics and awnings for a variety of vehicles, including RVs, buses, trailers, trucks, trains and boats. The company employs 7,500 at this Elkhart location.
3. Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. (Lafayette, IN)
Established in 1987, 6,200 workers at this massive Subaru auto assembly plant in LaFayette produce 32,900 vehicles per month, including the Subaru Legacy, Outback, Ascent and Impreza vehicles. The facility encompasses 468,000 square feet and has won a number of environmental, quality and community awards, including the WorkOne Achievement Award from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development and Indiana Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence.
4. Toyota Motor Mfg., Indiana, Inc. (Princeton, IN)
The Toyota Tundra was the first vehicle to roll off the assembly line at this Toyota assembly plant in 1998. Today, 5,400 employees work at the 4.3 million square foot plant, where they produce hybrid, midsize & full- size SUVs and minivans, including well-known models Sequoia, Sienna, Highlander, and Highlander.
5. Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Div. (Crane, IN)
Operated by the United States Navy, this location is one of several military equipment suppliers, providing naval prototypes, electronic systems and special warfare weapons, employing 5,000. 42509

Founded in Warsaw in 1927, Zimmer Biomet is among the world’s leading medical equipment providers, producing reconstructive & spinal implants as well as trauma orthopedic surgical & dental products. The company has operations in more than 25 countries.
7. General Motors, Fort Wayne Assembly (Roanoke, IN)
At this GM pick-up truck assembly plant in Fort Wayne, 4,500 employees work on the Chevrolet Silverado, and the GMC Sierra. Established in 1986, the company recently made headlines when it announced it would be increasing production at the Fort Wayne assembly plant in September 2020.
8. ArcelorMittal USA, LLC (East Chicago, IN)
A world leader in steel production ArcelorMittal USA, LLC supplies steel for a wide range of markets including automotive, construction, appliance, agricultural, and machinery. The company’s East Chicago location produces hot-rolled, cold-rolled & hot dip galvanized steel sheet, and employs 4,142.
9. Rolls Royce (Indianapolis, IN)
Rolls Royce is a world leader in delivering clean, sustainable power in the civil aerospace, power systems and defense industries, producing aero engines for commercial and military aircraft and high-speed reciprocating engines and propulsion systems. 4,000 employees at this Indianapolis location focus on gas turbine engines for the civil & defense aerospace, and marine & energy markets.
10. United States Steel Corp., Gary Works (Gary, IN)
Rounding out our top ten list, United States Steel Corp ranks as Indiana’s 10th largest industrial employer, accounting for 3,800 jobs in Gary, and is among the nation’s top iron and steel companies. A world leader in steelmaking operations, this location, otherwise known as “Gary Works” focuses on iron and steel fabrication and processing, with a yearly capacity of 7.5 million tons.
