Several new manufacturing plants were announced in November as manufacturers ramp up production to meet soaring demand and fill gaps in the supply chain. This month brought news of a major semiconductor operation breaking ground in Texas, new facilities to help strengthen the critical supply chain, and several innovative food and beverage manufacturers.

Let’s take a look at the latest manufacturing operations breaking ground this month.

First up: The Big Samsung Semiconductor Plant

With investments pouring in for semiconductor production amid unprecedented shortages, all eyes have been on Samsung, which has been eyeing several potential locations for a massive new $17 billion chip manufacturing facility. Just yesterday, Samsung announced it has chosen Taylor, Texas as the site for its new chip plant. Billed as the “largest-ever investment” by the company, the facility is poised to “improve supply chain resilience of crucial logic chips.”

“As we add a new facility in Taylor, Samsung is laying the groundwork for another important chapter in our future,” said Kinam Kim, Vice Chairman and CEO, Samsung Electronics Device Solutions Division. “With greater manufacturing capacity, we will be able to better serve the needs of our customers and contribute to the stability of the global semiconductor supply chain.”

The Texas site will encompass more than 5 million square feet and will manufacture chips for a wide range of applications including mobile, 5G, high-performance computing and artificial intelligence. The new facility is expected to create 2,000 high-tech jobs.

Two New Facilities Meet Packaging Industry Demand

In Pennsylvania, Pratt Industries, Inc. announced the grand opening of their advanced manufacturing box plant in the town of Carlisle. The new facility employs 215 and represents an investment of $150 million. “This $150 million state-of-the-art box factory is our company’s most recent investment in America and we’re proud to have created another 215 full-time, high-paying, green-collar manufacturing jobs right here in Pennsylvania,” said executive chairman of Pratt Industries, Anthony Pratt in a press statement.

Demand for boxes has been surging in recent years due to unprecedented demand for shipped goods amid the pandemic and with the rise in e-commerce. IndustryNet has noted elevated search activity for boxes and related items for several months now.

In related news, Celadon Development Corporation announced plans to open a new $155 million state-of-the-art cardboard recycling and advanced manufacturing facility in the Savannah, Georgia area. The new investment includes establishing a North American headquarters, a recycled brown pulp manufacturing facility, a logistics center, and a dry processing plant for old corrugated cardboard.

Food Manufacturing Innovation Coast to Coast

In California, food and beverage manufacturer T. Hasegawa USA announced plans this month to establish a new 60,000 square-foot facility in Rancho Cucamonga, California. The new plant will largely support production of sweet food and beverage flavors and is expected to increase the company headcount by 30%.

"We have experienced organic growth in recent years and outgrown our original manufacturing facilities as we continue to expand our world-class food and beverage flavor development," said Tom Damiano, CEO of T. Hasegawa USA, Inc. in a statement.

Meanwhile in Alabama, food and beverage manufacturer J.M Smucker Co. announced plans in November to open a new plant to support production of the company’s popular “Uncrustables” sandwiches. The massive facility represents an investment of $1.1 billion and expects to create up to 750 jobs.

The new plant is expected to support J.M Smucker’s plans to more than double its current production capacity, helping the brand to achieve $1 billion in annual sales over the next five years.

“Our Smucker’s® Uncrustables® brand continues to be one of the fastest growing in our portfolio and in the food sector more broadly. We are proud of the success the brand has achieved, due in no small part to the tremendous efforts of our employees, and we’re excited to take advantage of the opportunities and growth our investments will enable,” said Mark Smucker, President and Chief Executive Officer.

And in Chicago, a company called Nature’s Fynd, which takes an innovative approach to meatless protein production, announced plans to open a new facility in Marina Crossings, increasing its existing presence on the city’s South side. Nature’s Fynd produces nutritional fungi protein from a microbe with origins in the geothermal springs of Yellowstone National Park.

The company plans to add more than 200 new jobs for a total of 350 employees by the end of 2023.

“Following our successful retail launch in California, we are excited to expand our distribution to Chicago and other cities over the coming months,” said CEO Thomas Jonas. “Bolstering our production capacity in Chicago is the next major milestone as we bring our Fy-based foods that are better for people and better for our planet to more stores.”

Strengthening the Critical Supply Chain

Thermo Fisher Scientific, Inc., among the world’s leading science companies, unveiled plans this month to establish a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Mebane, North Carolina. Part of a $195.5 million co-investment with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to strengthen the critical supply chain, the new facility will focus on production of laboratory pipette tips.

Thermo Fisher Scientific has a large footprint in the state of North Carolina, employing 4,000 across the state at multiple manufacturing and research facilities. The new pipette operation is expected to create 150-200 advanced jobs.

"The new manufacturing facility will help the U.S. meet future demand surges for vital laboratory products while bringing more high-quality jobs to North Carolina," said Mark Stevenson, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Thermo Fisher Scientific.

Meanwhile, in Virginia, VFP, Inc. a manufacturer of custom-designed enclosures used to protect critical infrastructure announced plans this month to expand its existing operation in Scott County, Virginia, investing $7.2 million. The new expansion will allow the VFP to produce larger concrete shelters for equipment such as telecommunications, public safety radios, data centers and utility projects.

“VFP has enjoyed over 56 years of excellence in building design and manufacturing, providing quality pre-manufactured structures to the telecommunications, power, public safety, modular data center, and broadband industries” said Scott File, President of VFP Inc. “Since relocating our manufacturing facilities to Scott County in the 1990s, we have continued to grow.”
